At the southern end of Puget Sound,
dominated by views of the Olympic Mountains, lies Washington's
capital of Olympia. The area is part of volcano country, with the spectacular
Cascade Mountains and Mount St. Helens to the east. While none of the cities and
towns in the region have large populations, golf courses, hiking trails and parks
are in plentiful supply. Olympia displays all the somber ambiance of a capital
city in the marble halls, monuments and opulent grounds of its government buildings.
Art enthusiasts should visit the Washington
Center for the Performing Arts, which houses performances by the Olympia
Symphony Orchestra and a number of other community music, theater and dance
groups. Olympia's
Washington State Capital Museum houses two floors of exhibits, including displays
that delve into American Indian history. Centralia
boasts hundreds of antique dealers and dozens of factory outlets, and Tumwater
offers many museums and art galleries.
